Lokta Paper

Lokta paper, also known as Nepali kagaj, has been part of Nepalese heritage for centuries. Dating back to the 12th century, it was traditionally used to document important stories, print mantras for prayer wheels, and record sacred Buddhist texts. Even today, it plays a key role in Nepal’s official paperwork—used for land ownership certificates (lal purja) and legal documents.

This eco-friendly paper is handmade from the bark of the Daphne shrub, locally called the Lokta bush, which grows naturally in the Himalayan forests. What makes it sustainable is its ability to regenerate fully within 4 to 6 years after being harvested, making Lokta paper a renewable and "tree-free" alternative.

Beyond its environmental benefits, Lokta paper is known for its strength and durability. The long, flexible fibers give it a soft, textured feel and create beautifully frayed edges when torn. It’s a favorite among artists and crafters for bookbinding, origami, printmaking, and reusable gift wrapping.
